Measuring energy poverty in South Africa based on household required energy consumption

This study incorporates household energy needs into Foster–Greer–Thorbecke (FGT) based poverty measures to examine in South Africa. Our household-specific line is founded on the application of semiparametric estimation expenditure shares that are used determine a equivalence scale and, thus, specific required consumption level or line. We find headcount extensive, exceeding 50%, as gap and severity poverty. Decomposition results suggest rates decrease with income, lower income groups contribute more total than higher across all three indexes. Although our determined by choices we have made, model flexible enough allow for assumptions differ from ours, provide useful sensitivity analysis further understanding.
